Job Opening: Supervisory Hydrologist; USGS



The USGS Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center has an exciting leadership opportunity available!

We are currently seeking applicants to fill a Supervisory Hydrologist position and join the center’s leadership team. There is one vacancy that may be filled at any of the following locations:

  • Indianapolis, IN
  • Columbus, OH
  • Jeffersontown, KY

As a Supervisory Hydrologist within the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center some of your specific duties will include the supervision of staff in the Hydrologic Investigations Section with projects that focus on:

  • Measurement, quantification, and assessment of all components of the water budget including but not limited to groundwater storage, evapotranspiration, precipitation, streamflow, interbasin transfers and water use.
  • Characterization of hydrologic and geologic systems to improve capabilities to model and predict future impacts related to water use and availability.
  • Development of new, and(or) improved groundwater-flow and transport models to better understand regional groundwater systems.
  • Advancement of monitoring technologies and data delivery to support water resource assessments within Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.
  • Evaluation and optimization of monitoring networks to better, and more efficiently, quantify the region’s groundwater resources.
  • Better understanding of regional groundwater / surface-water interactions.
  • Investigation of the influence of stormwater reduction measures to both quality and quantity of the water budget.
  • Participation in meetings with federal, state, and local cooperators to determine the water resource related needs of the region.
  • Improvement of data-delivery systems and technologies to make complex USGS science and data more easily understandable and relevant.

Position specific duties include:

  • Assisting science-team leads, the Center Director and the Center Management Team in the scientific, technical, and administrative direction of all water resources investigational programs of the Center.
  • Serving as Chief of the Hydrologic Investigations Section and ensuring timely performance of a satisfactory amount and quality of work and for accepting, amending, or rejecting reports and data submitted by employees under your direction.
  • Participating with science-team leads, the Center Director and the Management Team in proposing new projects.
  • Supervises, trains, and directs team leads as well as professional and technical personnel engaged in research and other scientific work related to water resources development and conservation.
